Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center, Sugarland, Texas

In Kidtropolis, visitors role play as they explore their city, take on jobs, and engage in their roles as producers, consumers, and decision makers. Visitors earn income by working in Kidtropolis, use Kidtropolis money in a way that models real life, and engage in trial and error to discover the importance of money management and financial planning

In Precision Center, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land, the Kidtropolis interactive automotive exhibit, children can experience working in an auto shop. The exhibit includes a Car Design station where children use design tools to express their new car ideas, an Assembly Bench to build car steering and suspension models, an Inspection Bay to examine the car for “flaws”, and a Crash Test Simulation that helps children learn about evaluating different car models and their ability to withstand a variety of crash scenarios.  It also shows what happens to the drivers through interactives designed to simulate real world crash test practices.

The main attraction of the museum is Kidtropolis, a miniature city where children can learn to work and shop. The educational facility features a cultural center, outdoor exhibit and think tank. There is also a vet clinic, bank building, diner, art academy, city hall, community school, news bureau, market and Mercedes-Benz precision center in an area dubbed Kidtropolis, which Golden said was by far the most popular attraction.

The Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center is designed to engage a broad range of children’s ages and interests. Now called Imperial Market, the museum is part of the redevelopment of the historic sugar mill being done by Johnson Development. The five galleries in the 12,500-square-foot space will seek to answer quintessential childhood questions through hands-on activities. The questions explored through the galleries include: Can I solve that? How are we alike? How does it work? Where does it come from? Can I do that? and How does my baby grow?

The News Bureau, sponsored by Fort Bend Herald, contains several interactives that allows visitors to experience working for a newspaper.

Mirrored after the award-winning Children’s Museum of Houston, the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center is housed in a 10,000 square foot repurposed historical building in Sugar Land. Inside the Discovery Center, six exhibits are provided as platforms for learning for children from birth to 12 years, with specific measurable educational outcomes for each. Each exhibit is focused on quintessential childhood questions such as “Where Does It Come From?”, “How Does it Work?” and “Can I Solve That?”
